Es klang gut – Schokolade und Design sagte die Anzeige! Die Schokoladeprobe war nur ein winziger Teil von der Kreativbusinesswoche in Muenchen und es lud alle ein ein Schoko-sofa  anzuschauen und viele suessen Kostbarkeiten zu probieren.  Das hat sicherlich mein Interesse geweckt und ich musste dabei sein. Der Laden ist sehr geschmackvoll eingerichtet und die Schokoauswahl ist gross. Alle Produkte sind toll praesentiert und man kann bestimmt tolle Geschenke finden. Zusaetzlich gibt es auch Hundeschokolade! Der Laden organisiert auch gerne Schokoladenverkostungen fuer Firmen oder Gruppen. Also, wenn du eine Idee fuer eine Geburtstagparty suchst, ruf Chokoin an!

Taking my camera for a walk in Naples

There are many reasons to say: “See Naples and die..."

Reading a few internet explanations, it is really not clear if the quote refers to the golden age of the city or its problems with cleanness and the inevitably following diseases. My recent visit did not make it unfortunately any clearer.

There were few reasons for the later explanation:

• The appalling state of the airport bus - we were really not sure if we will survive the journey to the port.
• The absolutely crazy behaviour of the motorcyclists in the narrow streets and sometimes even on pedestrian zones...
• Or the sightings of cockroaches in the train station cafe, indicating a very poor state of hygiene.

However, the incredible amount and quality of the art in local museums, monasteries, churches and palaces really speaks for the first explanation. As an art lover, I have concluded that it is worth stepping over quite a few dog sh**ts to see what Naples has to offer.

Here is my attempt to capture the city of contrasts...

When you are lucky, the city offers amazing views... Castel dell'Ovo, view of Capri and Piazza Plebiscito.

The narrow streets where even Smart looks like a LandRover, peeling walls and the luxurious arcades.

If you can brave the small streets slightly away from the beaten track, the market stalls offer great photo opportunities (watch the dog sh*t though!) And yes, it is cheese!!!

Did you know that this was happening as Jesus was born? Well, Naples has amazing tradition of nativity scenes and the local museums offer wide varieties of scenarios.

One entire street sells only nativity scenes "equipment" (not only figures but everything imaginable) and there is also a "doll hospital" - ospedale le bambole!

 

And last but not least the arts... Here are two pearls from my partner's camera... Museums don't need to be boring; you just need know how to look...

Neapel – die Stadt der Kontrasten
(The German Language Challenge - Week 6)

„Wenn du shabby OHNE chic magst, dann ist Neapel etwas fuer dich…“

Das habe ich am ersten Tag in Neapel gedacht.  Obwohl es billig war (4 Euro) und ziemlich effizient, der Bus von dem Flughafen ins Zentrum fiel fast auseinander.  Er hat komische Gereusche gemacht, die Heizung war hoch eingeschaltet und die schmutzigen Sitze wollten nicht mehr am Platz bleiben.  Trotzdem haben wir es in den Hafen geschafft.  Als wir den Chiaia Hotel problemlos auf der beruehmter Chiaia Strasse gefunden haben, war ich schon gluecklicher. Das Personal was super hilfreich und das Zimmer sauber and bequem. 

Neapel ist einfach voll von Kontrasten. Manche Strassen sind so eng und schmutzig, dass ich keine Lust habe, dort zu gehen. Auf der anderen Seite gibt es die Dei Mille mit Chanel, Burberry und anderen Geschaeften, die fast wie Bond Street in London wirkt. Ich bin nicht sicher, ob ich diese riesigen Unterschiede mag. Was aber bestimmt besuchenwert ist, ist die Kunst in Neapel! Die zahlreichen Museen, Kirchen, Kloester und Palaeste bieten unerwartete Schaetze. Wer in London oder Paris Tizian oder Caravaggio sucht, muss mit scharfen Ellbogen die anderen neugierigen Menchen weg stossen. In  Neapel hat man die beruehmten Kunstwerke fuer sich selbst. Allein vor vier Gemaelden von Tizian zu stehen ist einfach unbezahlbar!  Vielleicht liegt es aber nur an der Saison. Als wir die Sonne im Februar geniessen wollten, haben wir uns fuer Neapel entschieden. Es war schon warm and wir konnten den ganzen Tag in Pompei nur in Strickjacken rumlaufen, aber es hat auch an zwei Tagen stark geregnet und wir mussten auf den schoenen Blick auf die Stadt von dem hochliegenden Certosa Kloster verzichten. 

 Ich glaube, dass es moeglich ist, das beste von Neapel in vier Tagen zu sehen. Man muss allerdings viel zu Fuss laufen wollen. Da wir kein Problem damit haben und zusaetzlich zwei grosse Museen am Tag  schaffen koennen, haben wir unglaublich viel gesehen.  Ingesamt war dieser kurze Urlaub ein Erfolg. Als ich mich durch die 500 Photos gearbeitet habe, habe ich beschlossen, dass das Material fuer mehr als ein Blogpost reicht. Hier biete ich den ersten Teil an :

Dear Friends and Readers,
I almost missed my weekly blog entry. I guess it is a sign of my wavering motivation... It is almost 10pm here in Germany and I am trying to fullfill my promise and enter a short text, otherwise I will be feeling even worse. ;-)

Last weekend I had the opportunity to visit the graduate show at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. I love the building, the easy, cool atmosphere but where were the colours???

Die Akademie der bildenden Kuenste Muenchen

Letztes Wochenende habe ich die Austellung der Diplomanden in der Akademie gesehen. Weil ich dort bald studieren werde, habe ich die seltene Moeglichkeit begruesst. Es ist immer eine interessante Erfahrung die kunstlerischen Arbeiten zu sehen, mit welchen die Diplomanden das Studium an der Akademie abschliessen. Es war eine ungewoehnliche Austellung, die keine uebliche Sauberkeit von den erfahrenen Kuratonen getragen hat. Die Themen waren unterschiedlich, es gab keine Wandtexte und die Kuenstler selber haben Nudeln im Flur gegessen und  kein Interesse in den Besuchern gezeigt. Ich mochte die entspannte Atmosphaere, aber die Kunst war schwer zu beurteilen. Man muss sich die Bilder selbst anschauen zu raten, wer der naechste erfolgreiche Kunst-Stern sein wird...

My top 3:
Ben Goossens - the video still cannot possibly do justice to the visually spectacular chemical processes apparently filmed under water.

Gabi Blum - it looks like Hopper but it is in fact an installation, not a painting... Quite amazing, check out the second photo, it is part of the complicated structure "behind the scene". The artist herself could just walk in and be part of the picture - or not - like in our case, sadly...

Kerol Montagna - Fantastic paper objects resembling plants. Visitors had the opportunity to exchange pieces of artwork for their belongings. Great concept, unfortunately there was nothing left in the greenhouse by the time we visited...

Few more observations and glimpses out/of the fantastic building...
I appologize for the lack of names, it was sometimes quite difficult to work out whose work was whose...

The German Language Challenge - Week 4 - 100 Woerter Bewertung

Dear Friends and Readers,

4 Weeks in and my writing is still horrendous! I am starting to suspect that I suffer from some bizarre form of - only German Language related - dyslexia. Oh well, the only cure is to write more. Despite my strong hatred of the exam themes in the textbooks, I do scribble one text per week and my boyfriend still dutifully corrects, however, the themes are SO boring, that I don't wish to blog about them. Therefore I have concluded that posting short (100 Words) reviews of places and events I visited during the week might be a good und fairly painless writing exercise. Als ich das Wort „Fabrik“ erstmals gehoert habe, habe ich mir ein riesiges altes Ziegelgebaeude vorgestellt. Das war aber falsch. Diese magische Kuenstlerkolonie besteht aus mehreren kleinen Haeuschen, die aus ehemaligen Industriebetrieben umgebaut worden sind. Jedes Haus ist ein Atelier. Weil in manchen Raeumen noch die urspruenglichen industriellen Geraete stehen , wirkt die Atmosphaere besonders romantisch.  Die Wiede Fabrik oeffnet sich zweimal pro Jahr fuer die Oeffentlichkeit. Neben warmem Punch oder Prosseco sind auch kleine Kostbarkeiten in einer tollen kuenstlerischen Stube erhaeltlich. Der Ort  ist mit farbigen Lichteffekten geschmueckt, und die Kuenstler sind nett. Ein super toller Abend! Geniessen Sie die Bilder.

The doll making process and the price of HANDMADE...

The handmade goods are an Vogue at the moment. More and more people are searching for an original from a trusted maker rather than for a cheaply produced item from Asia. Me, and everyone else who produces small pieces at home is excited about this trend, however, there is a problem.

Although many people claim that they appreciate handmade goods, they do not seem to realize how much time, skill and creativity really goes into such item. These factors, of course, influence the price and the price might seem really steep and unjustified to many people. Well, I can well understand that. Although I am a maker, I sometimes restrain from buying an item, just because it is simply too expensive for my pocket, that is normal.

In this post, I am attempting to show, what it really means to make one of my trademark minimalist canvas doll.

Step 1 - the idea is mine, the drawing is done by me and although you can copy it, it will always be only a knock-off.

Step 2 - preparing the canvas - it is very hard material and requieres intensive ironing before it can be used. Then the cutting.

Step 3 - drawing the design on the canvas - by hand! Each shape is slightly different since I am a human and not a machine... Designing the outfit for the dollie is a creative and enjoyable part of the process. Although I repeat some pattern motives e.g. hearts and flowers, each doll is unique!

Step 4 - Embroidering the hair, eyes and dress ellements. It is like drawing with a sewing machine and it is done by me, it is not a computerised pattern. It gives each doll a different character.

Step 5 - Sewing the doll together and turning it inside out - the most difficult and scary step as the canvas is VERY hard and the doll parts are very narrow. Not every doll survives this step despite my most careful precautions. I sew each sensitive area 2 -3 times to reinforce them (work that no one sees).

Step 6 - Stuffing and sewing shut.
Step 7 - Photographing, Listing on Etsy and Promoting...
